Car sales are up, and the ubiquitous one is thrilled:

“There are three good reasons why potential buyers should grab the opportunity presented by the scrappage scheme: the scheme’s £2000 grant, VAT at 15% until the end of the year and the better fuel efficiency of a new car over a 10-year-old one,” said Edmund King, the AA’s president.

And there’s nothing like a new car to cheer you up and help you to forget about this sort of doom-laden nonsense:
