Lorry driver fell asleep, killed cyclist

A truck driver's admission he nodded off before killing a German cyclist on the outskirts of Te Puke last year, has prompted police to press a charge against the company he worked for.

Mr Cox said there had been pressure on drivers who did not get the job done within the expected time frame. He said those who pushed the boundaries were even subtly rewarded by the company sometimes by being given the best truck in the fleet.

"There's all these sort of pressures that are on you to get there and get the job done."
