A fourth fatality

Apart from the police officer run down and killed on the A249 and the two teenagers killed locally when a driver went off the road into a tree, it now emerges that there was a third fatal crash on Sunday morning, evidently also the result of reckless, excessive speed:

A golfing prodigy was killed when his car overturned and hit a tree - just six days after passing his driving test. Sam Gattens, 17, was driving with three friends when his red Vauxhall Corsa left the road in the early hours of yesterday morning.

If terrorists had killed four people in three different locations in just a few hours, this would be a massive story, with politicians lining up to express their horror, disgust and determination to prevent it happening again. But road carnage – that’s a different story altogether.
